How Your Health and Mindset Impact Your Success as a BDM

Four years ago, I made a decision that changed everything.

I invested in a mentor who challenged me to grow not just professionally, but personally. At the time, I was already excelling in my role as a Business Development Manager (BDM). But I had a feeling there was still more to gain. More energy. More focus. More fulfilment.

What I didn’t realise then was how much of my success as a BDM was directly linked to my health and mindset.

When I committed to changing my lifestyle, everything improved. I started moving daily, deepened my relationships, and worked on both my IQ and EQ. My business grew faster than I expected. I built strong, meaningful connections and even met the person I’m marrying next year.

That journey taught me something I live by now: when you take care of yourself, success follows.

The Link Between Health, Mindset and BDM Success

BDMs operate in high-energy environments. We are constantly meeting new people, solving problems, and pursuing growth targets. If you’re not looking after yourself, your results will eventually reflect that.

Your ability to grow a rent roll, convert leads, and build trust depends on how energised, focused, and resilient you are.

Here’s how I made it work.

1. Physical Health Fuels High Performance

Your body is your most valuable business tool. The way you treat it affects everything from your focus to your stamina.

When I stopped drinking coffee and alcohol, I noticed a big shift. My energy became more stable. My focus improved. I started moving every day, whether it was at the gym, going for a walk, or doing yoga. This routine gave me more clarity and stamina for my work.

If you’re constantly tired or sluggish, your clients and colleagues will feel it. But if you show up energised and present, you’ll naturally attract more opportunities.

2. Mindset Shapes Long-Term Results

Your mindset influences how you handle challenges, growth, and setbacks.

I used to operate with a constant hustle mentality. I thought burnout was normal. That changed when I began investing in my mindset. I started learning more about emotional intelligence and personal leadership. I connected with people who challenged me to think differently and take control of my thoughts.

As a BDM, how you deal with rejection, competition, and pressure will define your success. A strong mindset gives you the ability to stay calm, bounce back, and keep moving forward.

3. Redefine What Balance Means

The idea of perfect balance is a myth. As Hermione Gardiner shared in one of her blogs, trying to achieve a perfectly balanced life can lead to disappointment and burnout.

Instead of chasing balance, I focus on being intentional with my time and energy. Some days are more work-focused, others are more personal. What matters most is that I am clear on my priorities and I honour them.

4. Be Present in Each Moment

Being present is a game-changer.

When I’m working, I give it everything. When I’m with my loved ones, I try to be fully there. Switching constantly between work and life without boundaries creates stress. But when I set clear blocks of time for different parts of my day, I feel more effective and connected.

5. Surround Yourself with the Right Support

Success is not something we do alone. I gained so much from having mentors and a supportive community around me. Being around people who valued health, mindset, and ambition helped me stay on track.

If you want to stay committed to your growth, surround yourself with people who live the way you aspire to.

6. Use Time Blocking to Stay Focused

One of the most powerful productivity tools I use is time blocking. This means dedicating specific parts of the day to one task or theme. It helps reduce distractions and allows for deeper, more effective work.

For BDMs juggling multiple priorities, time blocking creates structure and focus.

Your Career Grows When You Do

The most successful BDMs I know don’t just focus on building skills. They also invest in their mindset, their health, and their wellbeing.

Your energy, clarity, and resilience are the foundation of your performance. When you take care of yourself, you can serve clients better, convert leads with confidence, and handle the demands of business development with ease.

Take a moment today to reflect. What is one small change you could make to improve your energy or mindset?
